Skills Executives Must Acquire |
|
(Peter Frans - Managing Partner - Trimitra Consultants) |

|
Executive responsibilities, functions, and roles are
among the most demanding in the world.
Successful executives prepare themselves by
acquiring and developing a number of key managerial skills including:
-
Problem solving and decision making skills.
Experience has shown that astute individuals who apply themselves to the
task can improve their problem solving and decision making record.
-
Conference leadership skills. Henry Mintzberg
found that executives spend nearly three-quarters of their time in meetings,
10 percent of them unscheduled.
-
Staff development skills. Good organizations are
a direct result of quality of people employed, the nature and extend of
their training, and the effectiveness with which their performance is
evaluated and improved.
-
Information management skill. Information
management is related to communications, of course. Relevant information is
the substance of communication and provides the backbone for effective
decision making.
-
Initiative and entrepreneurial skills.
Organizations that meet their goals depend on the ideas of their members and
the forcefulness with which these ideas are implemented.
-
Time management skills. You are already know
that you don’t have early enough time to accomplish all that you would like
to. Mintzberg’s studies showed that executives are pinned to their desks or
to the telephone for over a quarter of their time. When added to time
consumed in meetings and conferences, this leaves the average executive less
than 15 minutes open time a day. With better time management, you can do
better than that.
-
Change and stress management skills. If
everything in business remained stable, a computer could do the executive’s
job. But few things are constant. The business environment is dynamic.
Change is its normal pattern. And, with change comes stress. Successful
executives are able to manage both.
-
Career development skills. Your career takes
managing – in the sense that you must set goals, develop plans for attacking
them, and motivate yourself to follow these plans.
